Shawn Tyler Stein is a professional drummer born and raised from San Francisco. He serves the Bay Area music scene as a regular and an on-call member for Bay Area based touring artists, a regular drummer in various local bands and a freelance private drum teacher, in addition to playing with his own trio/quartet. As a working musician, Shawn covers a wide variety of musical styles daily, at venues locally in the Bay Area and across Northern California.

As a live-show performing musician, Shawn has built a reputation as a reliable and sought out musician for casual club dates locally around the Bay Area to far in advance gigs out of town. Shawn has worked with a multitude of projects over the years, consistently bringing a high quality of musicality and energy to his playing. Since before being able to legally step into bars and nightclubs, Shawn has maintained gigs with multiple projects at a time. Shawn has developed into a versatile drummer across many genres with an emphasis in R&B, Soul & Neo-Soul, Jazz, Hip Hop, Funk, Rock, Blues, Pop/Top 40 and various world music styles.

Shawn has worked with or currently performs with artists such as Lightning Rose (Rachel Rose of Jefferson Starship), Stymie & The Pimp Jones Luv Orchestra, Elena, Roem Baur, Shamilah Ivory, Tory Teasley, Speakease, Oakadelic, Big Blue Soul Review, The Jro Project, Eric Silverman, Hydrophonic, David Davis, Silas Fermoy, and with many others independent artists. He is also a regular house band member at many of the Bay Area funk and R&B jams.

Shawn has performed on opening sets before Grammy award winning artists on multiple occasions, including Mike McCready’s (Pearl Jam) Flight to Mars at The Independent and for Fantastic Negrito at The Chapel both in San Francisco. He has also performed before for well-known acts such as Marcy Playground.

Additionally Shawn earned a degree in music through the San Francisco State University Jazz program, where he studied Afro-Cuban and Jazz music and has also studied independently under renown professional drummers: Atma Anur, John Mader, Akira Tana, John Calloway, and Dennis Dismore while crafting his own sound on drums, offering his unique musical perspective.
